Smart glasses are spectacles made to display real-time information directly on the lenses. Scientists are adopting this technology to help visually impaired people making use of their residual vision in navigation and recognising everyday object.

The special smart glasses come with two tiny cameras mounted on the corners of the frames to capture images of objects. The collected pictures are then projected onto the OLED lenses of the glasses in a simple and intuitive way. This is similar to personal movie screens with augmented images for the partially sighted to see. At the same time, the glasses can recognise road signs and bus numbers and convert them to audible speech via a set of headphones. Additional features may include a compass, a global positioning system, and a gyroscope, which is a device that measures or maintains orientation.

People with moderately to severely impaired sight will benefit the most from this technology. They may no longer need to receive invasive medical procedures of implanting silicon chips to enhance visual signals to the light-sensitive cells of the retina. A pair of smart glasses will become a much cheaper and safer option.
