First of all, be vigilant when making friends on the internet, especially those good-looking ones from social networking platforms. There could be a scam for money or relationship. Swindlers put photos of handsome men or pretty girls as their profile pictures to seduce others (of opposite sex) for crime solicitation.

Then, you can check their accounts of other social network platforms to understand the background and validate their real identities as a basic step. If there is any suspicious personal information or nothing shared from personal life, you may just cut the contact right away.

Only time will tell a person. Think twice to meet your net friend only after knowing or having well acquainted for a certain period of time. But never meet alone at strange or quiet places. Do not involve in money matters. Refuse properly any demands for money, especially to those requests of money-lending or investments.
