Kung Hei Fat Choi! I love the Chinese New Year not only because I can participate in many celebrating activities to see my friends and relatives, but also because of the red packets and lucky food! Sadly that I could not visit my friends during this Chinese New Year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, my parents and I stayed home to made one of my favourite lucky food turnip cake!

Turnip is a common vegetable available in winter with similar nutrient value as ginseng. My homemade turnip cake is healthy and tasty with a different recipe from the others. We had special family spices and I started mixing the spices, preserved meats and the turnips on the twenty-seventh day in Lunar Calendar to make sure the turnip cake would be ready by the Spring Festival. Under my father’s supervision and guidance, I ground and rolled the turnips into pastry for the first time. The process was really hard work that my father and I both sweated a lot.

The cooked turnip cake was a big success of course! My grandparents said that turnip cake symbolised wealth and growing taller in Chinese. So I hereby wish every reader a healthy and wealthy year of the Ox, and every kid grow stronger and taller!
