The Psychological Services Group (PSG) hosted a "Balances and Wisdom" seminar at the Police Headquarters on May 27 to promote the theme of this year's psychological wellness programme on "HERO – Healthy and Resilient Officer". Dr Agnes Chan, who is a singer, an author and Doctor of Education, was invited to talk about ways to foster communication across generations in workplaces and families with the aim of building resilience and promoting psychological wellness among officers.
After Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chan Joon-sun gave an opening speech, Dr Chan gave a sharing to the audience. She pointed out that adults are like children, in a sense that both have to be continuously exposed to novel things and environments in order to cultivate adaptability and resilience to keep up with the rapid development of the world. When an officer has accumulated his or her wisdom and confidence, he or she would be capable of providing an environment for junior officers to express their views. Through constant communication, both sides would increase their understanding and respect for each other, thereby maximising their team efficiency.
Dr Chan believes that policing is a noble but stressful and challenging profession. She called on Force members to be flexible and imaginative in their thinking at all times, adding that in times of frustration they should not lose hope and should think of the bright future. Besides building resilience in life and at work, it is also important to face up to problems and seek help before it is too late.
The seminar attracted the participation of over 200 Force members and their families. The attendees actively participated in a question-and-answer session and had an interactive discussion with Dr Chan.
Force members are welcome to contact the PSG at 2866-6206 for enquiries or making an appointment when in need.
