Map of Drill Square

Introduction

The Drill Square is the most significant landmark in the College. Its layout has remained unchanged since the renovation in the 1960s. All trainees are required to undergo foot drill training in that area of about 5,000 square metres, which helps to foster their discipline, vigilance, concentration, team spirit and patience, so that they can meet various challenges when carrying out frontline duties in future.

Traces of parallel straight lines left on the Drill Square are the footprints of trainees over the years. Given the arduous nature of foot drill training, those sweat and tear-filled traces are called “tear stains”.

There is a small slope of 10-odd metres long near Peter Moor Building at the Drill Square, which is known as “The River Kwai Bridge”. It is named after the theme song of the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, which is played when trainees walk out of the Square at the passing-out parade. The Bridge thus becomes one of the landmarks in the College. The moment when trainees leave the Square through the Bridge at the graduation ceremony signifies that they have completed all of the foundation training and have become genuine police officers.
