The Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) confirmed on June 26 that the Probationary Inspector (PI) and Recruit Police Constable (RPC) Professional Diploma Programmes are recognized under the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework (QF) as meeting the accreditation standards at QF Level 5 (at the same level of a Bachelor's degree of the academic sector) and Level 4 (at the same level of an Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma) respectively.

The accreditation reaffirms Police College as a centre of excellence in police training and development, and the QF-recognised qualifications also mark a milestone for PI and RPC as they embark on a challenging and rewarding career with the Force.

In July last year, Police College formed a working group for applying for vocational accreditation of the PI and RPC training programmes with the HKCAAVQ. At the same time, with a view to further enhancing integration of the curricula for meeting frontline operational needs, Police College's Foundation Training Centre (FTC) conducted a major review of the two training programmes in accordance with the college's established Quality Assurance Mechanism.

Upon the successful accreditation of the revised PI and RPC training programmes by the HKCAAVQ, Police College will be able to award trainees with vocational qualifications that are recognised under the QF, namely "Professional Diploma in Leadership and Management in Policing" for PI at QF Level 5 and "Professional Diploma in Policing" for RPC at QF Level 4.

Following submissions of a statement of intent in October last year and accreditation documents in February to the HKCAAVQ, an Accreditation Panel, comprising local and overseas experts from the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, conducted an on-site visit to Police College's Aberdeen Campus from May 13 to 16.  The panel members met college management, training and supporting staff of FTC and Specialised Services Training Centre, frontline commanders, lecturers of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), recruits as well as graduated officers whilst conducting a holistic assessment of Police College and the two training programmes.  The members also watched demonstrations on tactics training, RPC foot drill and practical examinations, OUHK's exercise on conflict management, PI's practical leadership exercise, and interactive scenario training.

On the whole, the panel members were very impressed with the staff members, the two training programmes and the college's facilities.
