Mr Lo's swearing-in ceremony before the Chief Executive, Mr C Y LeungMr Lo's swearing-in ceremony before the Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung
After his swearing-in at Chief Executive's Office on the morning of May 4, Commissioner Lo Wai-chung had a busy first working day, meeting Commissioner Rank Officers, staff representatives, and the media.

In his interview with the media, Mr Lo said the rule of law has all along been the cornerstone of the success of Hong Kong. To maintain this, it is most important for the citizens of Hong Kong to continue to support the Force in fighting crime and upholding the rule of law.

Mr Lo said he will enhance communication with the public by explaining as far as possible the reasons behind Police's decisions and actions so that the public would understand more about Police work and the difficulties frontline officers are facing. Through enhanced communication, he hoped the Police and the public would have more trust and respect for each other.

"Apart from 'police-public collaboration', I hope the Police and the public would treat each other like family members because we all live and work in Hong Kong," Mr Lo said.

Series of meetings

Later, in the meeting with Commissioner Rank Officers, Mr Lo elaborated on his approach to work. He said his primary duty is to build on the Force's well-established foundations to ensure it will continue to develop. In addition to continuing with its core businesses, i.e. upholding the rule of law, fighting crime and protecting Hong Kong citizens, the Force will take action against illegal acts in a fair, impartial and politically neutral manner, he added.

In face of a rapidly changing environment, the Force will take swift and effective measures to combat crime and strengthen liaison with the Mainland and overseas counterparts in order to deter cyber crime, terrorism and other transnational crimes.

Mr Lo also had meetings with staff representatives, including police and the civilian grades. He stressed the importance of unity within the Force. He noted, "I hope all members, regular, auxiliary and civilian, will continue to carry out our duties with utmost dedication. I shall defend the dignity of the Force, enhance our internal communication, listen carefully to staff opinions and protect the reasonable rights and welfare of all members of the Force."

Mr Lo said that although Police work will become more and more challenging, he is convinced that if Force members stay united and continue to devote themselves to their sworn duties, the Force will be able to ensure that Hong Kong remains one of the safest and most stable societies in the world.
