With enactment of the amended "Criminal Procedure Law of the People's Republic of China" on January 1 this year, it is expected that the criminal procedural system on the Mainland would be enhanced.
From July 22 to 26, the Deputy Inspector of the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, Mr Dong Xiaogang, led a 35-member delegation to visit the Force, Prosecutions Division of Department of Justice, Government Laboratory and the Forensic Pathology Service of Department of Health.  The purpose of the visit was to study Hong Kong's criminal procedures in terms of judicial process, collection of evidence, testimony of expert witnesses, and the technologies used in criminal investigation.
 
The delegation paid a courtesy call on Director of Crime and Security Lo Wai-chung. At the invitation of Liaison Bureau (LB), the delegation introduced the content of the amended "Criminal Procedure Law" as well as its significance for Mainland law enforcement officers.
 
Among members of the delegation were experts of forensic science from various cities and provinces. The delegation visited Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, Identification Bureau and LB, besides the mock court at Police College.
 
At the invitation of LB, the deputy head of the delegation, Mr Niu Yong, who is also the Deputy Chief of the Forensic Science Working Office under the Criminal Investigation Bureau, gave a briefing on the amendments to the "Criminal Procedure Law". During discussion on the changes made by public security officers in line with enhancement of the "Criminal Procedure Law", Mr Niu also explained the significance of the amendments and analysed their impact on the work of public security authorities.
 
After the briefing, Mr Dong also took many questions from the floor, facilitating the interaction and exchange between the Force and the Mainland.
